MORE ON THE NEW EMPLOYMENT ORDER

I had a wager last week with a cynic, a medical professional with an outdated view on life, that within 20 years Massey, or one of the Polytechnics, will offer a diploma course in stop-go sign holding.

As always, with such activities, the simpler the task, the grander the job description.

Thus the diploma will be in Applied Traffic Management or such-like, with theoretical and practical courses, stretched out over a year, followed by a graduation ceremony with a guest speaker notable to present the diploma to recipients, surrounded by proud family members.

True, can you imagine the road cones at the ceremony to guide the diploma recipients in the right direction of the podium?.

Bob, further to your commentary in reference to the predicted Traffic management Degree, I thought I’d share the recent commentary,
Lollipop Ladies In Australia Earn A Whopping $130,000 A Year – TWICE The Amount Nurses Earn! A Sydney traffic controller, otherwise known as a lollipop lady, is earning a whopping $130,000 (£67,000) a year – which is TWICE the amount of money nurses earn.29/01/2020

I would have thought it would be called Transportation Logistics.

There must be degree qualifications in road cone moving, surely? Also scaffolding and house wrapping?

The ultimate is a PhD in not doing anything and an Honorary Doctorate for stopping anyone else doing anything.

    scaffolding is an apprenticeship now

…. the current government , and many councillors throughout our fair land are in line to receive honorary doctorates in stopping anyone else from doing anything ….

No doubt there will be a polytech course on something that accommodates this; yet you learn and retain so much more with on the job training. The pen pushers that create these courses couldnt possibly understand this concept; or chose not too.

Education has been an business industry for some time; especially given there’s money in it. Your mate Trump has his own University, and saw that opportunity.

As for the wager, I love your expectations of a long life..

My wife volunteers for FENZ. She is a qualified lollipop lady. Guess what. The certificate expires so she needs to be retrained every 2 years. And…. It’s not for free! Go figure.

This reminds me of when I served on the BOP Polytec Council last century.
We had a presentation on providing a Truck Drivers Course.
It seemed that there was a great shortage of big Rig Drivers.

Note: I had been trained in the RNZAF to drive big rigs. A few weeks driving around, a couple of hours classroom then the final exam..

The proposal was that 13 week course be setup with a Fee of some thousands of dollars.
I could hardly contain myself.

My suggestion that I pop down to the local large trucking firms with a proposal that they provide some vehicles and fund an instructor so they could hire the “pick of the crop” was greeted with much disbelief. No that’s not the way we do it.

When I challenged the length of the course, I was informed that it had to be 13 weeks so that students could get a student loan to fund the course.

I stopped serving on the Council as my blood pressure couldn’t handle the stupidity of the academic managers.

I’m always intrigued by shovel ready projects which never seem to see many shovels so what about a degree in shovelling. Past and present tense

Just past long roadworks at Waipapa and yet again the only visible human activity there is two men in high viz jackets watching the road cones. At the new Puketona roundabout there is the regulation one man looking at a hole and four men watching him looking.

These contracts are obviously lifetime corporate gravy trains at taxpayers’expense.
