An unsigned circular letter received today from the editor of the Dominion Post newspaper advised of a subscription price increase to circa $800 p.a. (not unreasonable incidentally), but note this.
It’s addressed to “Dear Robert”, for God’s sake, this from someone I’ve never met. How stunningly dumb is that?
Newspapers everywhere are slowly dying before the electronic assault and in New Zealand, as the past decade’s figures show, the Dom’ is dying the fastest. Its annual fall in circulation roughly equates the death rate.
What this tells us is that newspaper readership is predominantly the practise of older folk, based on their life-time newspaper reading habit (such as me for example).
As a general proposition, older folk take great exception to discourteous familiarity from strangers. The Dominion Post, should rename itself the Dumb-Post.

Yes Sir Robert. Yes. Very soon fush and chups will be wrapped in recyclable beeswax (for an extra compulsory $5 charge) and they’ll be no need for a print version at all!
