MEANINGLESS GESTURES

An English animal rights outfit has triumphantly announced that through their lobbying, the Queen has agreed to abandon wearing fur. Fur is animal skin; so too is leather. Now if the Queen agrees to abandon leather as well (Shoes, belts, jackets etc), plus henceforth to confine her diet to vegetarianism and abandon her hobby of watching and encouraging the beating of horses, this announcement would be significant.

I’m 100% on the side of the anti-cruelty animal lobbyists but they’ll get nowhere if they rely on meaningless gestures.

This reminds me of the anonymous quote “People are more violently opposed to fur than leather because it’s safer to harass rich women than motorcycle gangs.” I also oppose animal cruelty but acknowledge that humans are omnivores so vegan and vegetarian practices are unlikely to become the dietary norm in Western countries.

Meaningless gestures are the stuff of politics, much easier than doing things that will make a real difference and hence unlikely to disappear.
