There’s a million dollars awaiting anyone who can make sense of remarks by Lindis Jones, the Chief Executive of Z Energy, in a recent interview with top Stuff journo’ Luke Malpass.
Specifically, Jones said,
“The clue to the company is in its name. It kind of comes back to why we’ve always called ourselves Z Energy. It’s not about being bound to the fuel. It’s actually providing energy. So it’s the convenience and the utility of the product”.
Malpass showed admirable restraint in not leaping up and strangling Jones for inflicting this world-class gibberish on him.

The new owners of Z as well as the previous investment company which bought the Shell network of service stations then sold it to the Australians are solely to blame for our loss of the Marsden Point refinery and with it at least a modicum of fuel self sufficiency. She’s polishing a turd and she knows it.
Channel Infrastructure NZ Limited, formerly New Zealand Refining Company Limited, is a publicly listed company, in which Z Energy Limited holds 12.67% of the shares. Z’s “new owners” are Ampol Australia, but they don’t appear to have been a direct shareholder in Channel and so were in no position to influence any decision about the refinery. They certainly had an indirect interest through Z’s 12.67% but that’s hardly enough for them to be “solely” responsible for the closure of the refinery. I’m sure the other 87.33% shareholders would have had a say in the matter. But perhaps that 87.33% includes a holding by the mysterious investment company you refer to. So come on Gordon. I’m dying to know how it works.
It was Ampol’s demand of Z before they’d consider a purchase of Z’s NZ assets. That the refinery must be closed. That’s why Z bought Caltex’s interests including their ownership shares in the refinery, to be able to gain control sufficient to force the closure so they could bring Ampol to the table.
I bet he regularly keeps his ducks in a row too, with a healthy dollop of blue sky thinking.
I’m happy to set up an interview with Jones to ellicit an interpretation, which will be valid given she is the author of the statement. Happy to take a $100k down-payment. Regards, Pete
My other half was involved in the development of the new Z stores originally.
As they were Shell stations (S), the intention was to have a letter similar (Z) and also similar colours of blue and orange as not to stray too far from the existing look.
It was ‘Z is for NZ’ or something like that.
The Z actually means nothing. There is sometimes confusion as we say ZED and tourists say ZEE!
As to making sense of his remarks, it is exactly like the logo, they mean very little.
The best explanation is probably a clear sense of a shift from fuel (petrol) to energy (electric charging) as otherwise in a few years, they may not have a business at all and the Z will stand for ZERO!
The usual corporate drivel. Wonder what their mission statement is. As a customer (rarely at Z) I just want cheap fuel.
You’ve missed the point. Turn Z on it’s side, and it becomes N, which features prominently in NZ, and can cover for both those letters. An economical solution for letter savers.
Z is the label given to the third axis in a three-dimensional point x,y,z. In other words, Z energy is not just an energy company in the two-dimensional x,y plane of petroleum energy, it has depth in the three-dimensional energy space.
Corporate Muppet using Corporate speak nonsense.
Because Z is the end of the line?

You’re welcome…
This clown is dragging your family name down with this drivel, Bob. Far be it for me to incite violence, but……..
I suspect your Million will be safe. Not even an Arts Council grant for research, or a ‘scientific’ study by the Royal Society of NZ could ever come close to deciphering such rubbish.
I am shocked that ‘going forward’ didn’t appear in the quote, perhaps Lindis failed that module in their extramural MBA course from Massey.
“Z Energy chose the name “Z Energy” to capture its independent spirit and unique Kiwi values. The company’s name is a reference to its commitment to New Zealand and its people, and its belief in the interconnectedness of people and the natural environment. “We took a global oil brand and made it our own – capturing our company’s independent spirit and unique Kiwi values. ” Appears they learned it from the Kamala Harris Lines. Out with the wokeness and word salad. Appears if you can’t make sense of something, the woke media laps it up.
I think your million is safe!
That ‘z’ isn’t just part of the name; it’s a symbol of the whole operation—dozing off with the CEO as the chief napper-in-charge. Maybe it’s time they hit ‘wake up’ instead of ‘snooze.
