New Zealand’s most fearless (and thus honest) cartoonist Garrick Tremain, continues to pump out common sense commentaries.
Here’s his latest re the government’s nonsensical sign language announcement.
Today’s Dominion-Post, doubtless with heavy hearts, has abandoned writing half the paper in a language few can read (maori) and has sunk to new depths of wetness, publishing its title in bloody sign language, specifically arm waving sketches.
It’s madness and a massive distraction to television viewers when a speaker is accompanied by someone aping a spastic, this to cater for an improbable audience of people both deaf and blind.
I include blind otherwise captions would do the job adequately without the distraction of the silly sign language carry-on.

Sadly, Garrick is the only non – lefty left in his profession.

NZHerald’s Emmerson is so left. I have never seen a cartoon having a go at Adern.
I’ve no problem with people wanting to preserve their language and traditions but expecting everyone else to do it is another matter entirely. Then it simply becomes a virtue-signaling vanity project.
Its unbelievable really..As you say captions are the obvious way to cater for deaf viewers. The only rationale for using gesticulating humans to do this is solely for appearances sake..To be seen to be being inclusive of a minority.
As for the Maori language..When will they realise that the surest way to destroy this is by pumping more and more money into” saving” it..
Language is the primary way a culture is manifested and preserved and so should be important but the sad fact is that most Maori have no interest in speaking it for the blindingly obvious reason that it would serve no useful purpose for them and until this changes the language will become the preserve of a small group of Maori language enthusiasts mostly consisting of progressive pakeha liberals.
