In today’s Post newspaper correspondence Michael Barnett, has come up with a brilliant idea re funding the City Council. Specifically, he suggests imposing taxes on city commercial sites.
I’ll chip in my contribution and suggest we call this new tax “rates”.
Reading these letters provide a daily delight albeit Michael’s proposal was well and truly trumped by the next one.
This was from a P.S. Waring of Eketahuna.
P.S. Waring wrote about “a certain regime” by which clumsiness he alluded to Russian aggression and concluded, “The time has come when we all need to get off our backsides”.
Doubtless, the Russian embassy in Wellington will read this and send an urgent cable to Moscow warning of this terrifying new Eketahuna threat to the Putin regime.

Unfortunately, the City Councils loans are a debt spiral…
There is an illusion these loans will be paid off, however more likely send the city bankrupt…
Unless the return on loans is greater than the cost of capital, they are only going to increase…course we know the returns will never be greater than the cost of capital, which is an argument that Councils should only take on debt where the cash returns do not cover the cost of borrowing…
Plenty of Councils in the UK have been tipped in bankruptcy for this very reason…
Might be time for Council to sign up to the responsibilities now bestowed on company directors…dont you think
Likewise the call from Peters, Luxon and Seymour for the Israeli government to have an immediate ceasefire in Gaza! They will be at a complete loss as to what to do, cease fire or ignore??
