IGNORANCE

In today’s New Zealand Herald is a large display advertisement illustrated ironically, given its content, with a picture of a human brain.

The advertisement is on behalf of the News Publishers Association promoting newspaper advertising and its message is,

“Neuroscience – the study of the brain, shows us that readers engage with advertising differently when it’s in a highly trusted, highly engaging environment”.

From this we can conclude that both newspapers management and their advertising agents don’t actually read newspapers.

I say that for if they did they’d be aware of the recent report most ran showing the almost total lack of trust the public have in our news media, only the Otago Daily Times scraping (barely) the 50% mark of trust against distrust.

Since the arrival of digital media broke the traditional business model of News Media, the role of media has changed for the worse. It’s now all about tribalism. This is evident in the developed economies and the developing. Us vs Them
Virtually all physical publishers & online “news” publications are now as much about propaganda as reporting news.
It will only get worse as traditional free to air TV disappears and all broadcast streams “pick a team”.
Regarding the manipulation of opinions, I often look at Trump and NZ’s own Labour party and wonder who is the master, who is the pupil.
