BRAGGING

When after six enjoyable decades of writing weekly and monthly newspaper and magazine columns I finally wearied of the obligation, my eldest son Chris suggested I write a Blog. That was six years ago and the appeal lay in the briefness of the entries compared with a newspaper column, plus their spasmodic nature, I only banging something up if in the mood or wanting to say it.

Over the course of these blogging years I’ve made three predictions which drew respectively sceptism with two and puzzlement with the third.

The first two sceptism-inducing ones were at the height of the Jacindamania insanity in which I predicted the government would lose the next election then 18 months away, in a landslide, which duly occurred.

The other was, again at the height of the Jacindamania absurdity, I predicting that in 15 months time she’d announce her retirement in January, 2023, which also duly occurred.

Finally, there was the puzzlement one. That was about five years back when I predicted the next British Conservative Party leader would be Kemi Badenoch.

This, unsurprisingly elicited much curiosity, as seemingly no blog readers back then had heard of her.

That she, an ethnic Nigerian, should follow an ethnic Indian as Tory Party leader reflects the nature of multi-culture contemporary British society, which has been over-whelming economically beneficial, not the least because unlike the Brits, they’re not work shy.

Well played

Please keep writing Bob, not withstanding your wit, but your pragmatism is refreshing

I think you have amazing insight Sir Bob, having followed closely your predictions.

That said, I was totally surprised you didn’t pick the mood in USA to put Trump back in charge.

Right on the money. Who is going to be our next PM?

Excellent, Sir Bob. With one exception, your predictions have been spot on. That exception, of course, arose from the same wishful thinking that we all had. None of us wanted Trump as 47th POTUS.

Then again, had Harris won, USA would have had its own Kamalamania, like a super-sized American version of Jacindamania (shudder). Poor bastards, What an awful choice they had to make.

It will be interesting to see if your prediction regarding Peter Buttigieg being the odds on favorite to be the next Democrat President in 2028 comes to pass.

Trump has already dished out another insulting nickname, referring to Buttigieg as Alfred E Neuman from MAD magazine, to which Buttigieg humorously responded.

“You know, we talk about elevating the dialogue, so the fact that I inspired him to make a literary reference possibly for the first time, is a good thing”.

Perhaps the 2028 election will not happen, if the White House has been reduced to rubble by a hypersonic missile?

What about Kamala Harris winning?

Fishermen, horse racers, and political pundits, only remind us of their successes

Like so many of those who have replied to Sir Bob’s latest piece, it would have been nice if he had admitted to at least one prediction he got horribly wrong.
If he had done so, it would have shown him to having accepted his own human failings just like the rest of us.
It would also have increased the number of people like us who enjoy his contributions of sensible comment.
Just for the record, he did predict that Kamala Harris would easily beat Trump ( Breaking Views, August 19th 2024.) just like so many others who also got it horribly wrong.
Mind you, it will be interesting to see what happens when “the deplorable” Trump takes over once again. My guess is that we are in for better times but that isn’t a prediction.

Please don’t predict the Mayor of London becoming UK’s PM!!

I didn’t pick her five years ago but did notice her and hope. Have been following her since. My prediction for the next republican candidate is Lara Trump. Trumps greatest legacy will be the first female President. Just a thought!

Kemi is a breath of fresh air and she is the start of a new group of politicians that will take over their respective parties. The top layers in both the Conservative and Labour parties need to be retired and Kemi is just the start. Find her interviews and enjoy. Who is the kiwi Kemi ?
