OUR WEIRD POSTAL SERVICE

I subscribe to a number of weekly publications sent from Britain.

The Economist reliably arrives in my letter box five days after it’s posted in Britain. So too the Guardian Weekly.

But not so the most enjoyable, namely the fastest growing British weekly news magazine, The Week. Sometimes I’ll receive two consecutive issues in the same mail.

Other times there’s a fortnight lapse. But what to make of a copy turning up last Saturday dated the 31st August, five months after it was posted?

The cover cartoon is headed, “The Race to the Top” and shows a smiling Kamala clawing her way up a slope while a visibly scowling Trump is shown flailing below her, as was the polling position back then.

To be frank I’m not complaining as there’s a side factor of great interest in receiving dated news commentaries. That is to read columnists’ opinions on issues of the day and see how they stack up with the actual outcomes. To be fair to the Week, their accompanying commentary emphasised the race was too close to call.

But the best by a country mile is the Economist which seems to pretty much get it right with its predictions.

The economist is a great read….with a little bias towards western interests…

What seems to be missing locally is very little gets reported in local council meetings. I guess its the inability to monetize it, with so few of us interested in whats really going on and prepared to pay for it….

I’m hoping to convince a local mate to create a platform similar to yours to get the word out on the street…

This problem exists here too with the delivery of my “Listner”. Some issues I never receive, mostly however they arrive several days into their viewing week . Maybe I need to move north as suburban Christchurch seems to be off their delivery map?

Im not sure if SRJ or others have been following the appalling behaviour of the UK Post Office towards its sub-post masters? There has been problems with UK post for a long time.

The magazines I did subscribe to physically from the UK stopped shipping outside of the UK and Europe after the covid lockdowns. Now I have to make do with a PDF subscription.

I suggest subscribing to Pressreader. All publications mentioned here, including most NZ newspapers, available instantly. A bargain at $40pm (the Economist does cost extra). I’ve been a subscriber for almost 10 years.
