I actually feel sorry for the poor buggers (no pun intended).
Inventing deities is understandable as a salve for life’s difficulties. But inventing celibacy as virtuous flies in the face of reality, with the inevitable consequences.

Wonder what changed in the 1600’s, when priests were allowed to be married?
Whatever it was, its had tragic consequences all round.
There was an issue with inheritance and hereditary power I believe.
