WEEPING BLOODY WOMEN

Here’s a line which will amuse readers, taken from English comic novelist David Nicholls’s entertaining 2006 “The Understudy”. This was a piss-take on thespianism.

“The Hyperion Theatre stands on Shaftesbury Avenue, in between a kitchen equipment wholesaler and an All-American steakhouse of the type found precisely nowhere in America, the kind of restaurant that always contains at least one woman weeping”.

What a beautifully constructed opening sentence. I would have guessed Truman Capote.
